Dr Cathy Gibbons is a Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care and Critical Care Retrieval based in Children’s University Hospital Temple Street.   She qualified from University College Dublin in 2007.

Following completion of training in Paediatrics, she completed a year of critical care fellowship in The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada.  During this time she developed an interest in end of life care in the critical care setting through her training with the critical care outreach team and in the ICU, culminating in the publication of a collaborative study on moral distress in staff members in critical care settings. She continued this interest in palliative care during a second fellowship year in the paediatric intensive care unit in Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Having taken up her position in Dublin, she collaborates closely with the palliative care team, and is a member of both the end-of-life and bereavement committees in the hospital.  Her role with the Irish Paediatric Acute Transport Service has enabled the development of a more robust service to facilitate the transfer of critically ill children to a place of their families choosing for end of life care, a service which will continue to be developed in the coming years.
